On Tuesday, August 29, 2023, drainage operations at holes 10 and 11 of the Castello di Spessa Golf & Country Club course were completed. These interventions made it possible to create a drainage system that is essential to ensure the disposal of excess water and avoid the dangerous stagnation that leads to compromising the aesthetics, the functionality of the turf, and a loss of the grass through root rot. This intervention has improved not only the drainage capacity of the field, but also the performance and durability of the turf, ensuring the full enjoyment of the sports surface even in the winter season.
Our Greenkeepers worked assisted by a specialized company using modern GPS and laser-controlled machinery, which enabled them to detect favorable gradients and carry out minimally invasive cross-sectional excavations on the route, setting up a “herringbone” drainage network (named for the configuration of the channels). This was followed by targeted excavation, the laying of a drainage network with the placement of microfissured pipes that will allow the branched percolation of rainwater, ensuring its runoff into specific channels for water recovery.

This was followed by targeted excavation, the laying of a drainage network with the placement of microfissured pipes that will allow the branched percolation of rainwater, ensuring its runoff into specific channels for water recovery.
Finally, after excavating the drainage with the catenary, cleaning the bottom by hand from smears and rechecking the gradient elevations, a light layer of gravel was laid to prevent contact of the drainage pipe with the soil. This was continued with the placement of the pipe, filled in further with specific gravel and with manholes to collect surface water, laid every 20 m to ensure their inspection as well as cleaning.
The operations were concluded with the filling of the gills with specific grain size silica sand, mixed in a percentage of peat to ensure water percolation.
We have already seen a positive trend after the summer rains at the end of August: we are now just waiting for the temperatures to drop so that we can proceed with grassing the turf.
We look forward to seeing you at our Golf & Country Club!
